I went to Takeo in December 30, 2014. It was my first time to travel to Takeo, and I didn’t have much extra time because I had only planned for a one-day trip. Based on my internet research, I wanted to experience all of the well-known spots of Takeo: the red tower gates, the kaiseki course meal of Ougiya Ryokan and the onsen with 1300 years of history.

I arrived at the Roumon (tower gates) of Takeo after about 10 minutes of going through the “Kousoku Takeo Hoppou IC” (Takeo Interchange). The Roumon, which can be said to be the symbol of Takeo Onsen, reminds on of the Ryugu Castle with its vivid colors and form. Called the Roumon from the Tembyou Era, it is an architectural structure where not even one nail was used upon its construction. Tatsuno Kingo, designer of the Tokyo Station, also designed the Roumon. Its construction was completed in the year 1915. Upon entering the Roumon, a public bath called “motoyu” which was built in the year 1875 can be seen, but was reconstructed with a new annex recently.
It was finally time to go to Ougiya for their kaiseki course meal. A Japanese-style construction located in front of the Roumon carrying quite a long history, it uses plenty of wood in its structure.
The atmosphere upon stepping inside the entry hall is greatly admirable!
I went to the onsen before eating. There are public and family onsens. The bath area itself was dim, with an underground-feel to it. The spring water itself is simply alkaline-based and the hot water made me feel good.
The meal was genuine kaiseki cuisine and gave me great satisfaction. The ingredients used are generally from Saga Prefecture.
