The Kanmon Straits Fireworks Display is a yearly event held at the Kanmon Straits, which links the Kyushu and Honshu Islands, and has become a highly popular symbol of summer.
The assembly places are the Shimonoseki side and the Moji Port side of the straits, from where the fireworks will be launched. The pyrotechnicians’ skills shine as the 2-way fireworks are successively launched, numbering to around 13,000 fireworks which include giant and aquatic types, and also ones which are launched in time with music. The attendees in 2014 were around 45,000 people on the Shimonoseki side and 70,000 on the Moji Port side, bringing the number to 115,000 in total.
I think it’s the largest and most beautiful fireworks display out of all the ones I’ve seen before. I took a lot of pictures, but that aside, I think looking at the fireworks with your own eyes, experiencing it personally and letting it remain in your heart is also very important.
For those who are living in Kitakyushu City for the first time and have an interest in fireworks displays, the Kanmon Straits Fireworks Display is definitely a must-see. There are special trains for going there and coming back, so I think going home is a smooth process even if the trains are full.
Incidentally, the 2015 fireworks display for 2015 is set on August 13. (Please look at the Asia Port Festival in Kanmon 2015 homepage, http://hanabi.walkerplus.com/detail/ar1040e00932/ for detailed information about the fireworks display.)
