Shikaumi Shrine is where the god of the sea, who has been spoken of in the Man’yoshu (the oldest anthology of Japanese poems) and worshipped by powerful and influential clans of fishermen in the area in the ancient times, is enshrined. Azumi-uji who is believed to be the forefather of the god of the sea is also believed to have first appeared from this shrine.

Other features on the island are the spot where national treasure “kin-in” (golden seal) was discovered, and the inscription of a line from an ancient Manyuu poem.
