I’m a third year international student here in Japan. I’ve visited a lot of places within Japan, but among them all, Okinawa is the most special. The dialect and architecture are extremely different from other regions of Japan. Okinawan beaches are the loveliest. There are no words to describe how beautiful they are.

Shuri Castle

We departed for Shuri Castle right away after arriving at Naha Airport at around 12 noon. There’s a monorail from the airport to Shuri Castle where there’s no need for transfers, so the entire ride was around 25 minutes.

We saw the stone walls right away upon arriving at the castle. It was extremely difficult to climb up to the castle because there are a lot of stone steps. Because of that, I think it’s better if females would wear sneakers when they come here.

Shuri Castle is the home of the king during the Ryukyu Era. Its style is similar to the National Palace Museum back in my home country. Shuri Castle isn’t as big as the National Palace Museum, but you can enter inside. You can walk along the same paths which the Ryukyu kings have also tread on in the past.

Taking your shoes off is necessary when you enter the castle. You’ll receive vinyl plastic bags at the entrance for your shoes.

You’ll see a really beautiful Japanese garden as soon as you enter. Even though it was a hot summer day, your heart will feel cool upon seeing this Zen-like garden.

We went to a ramen shop near Shuri Castle. Its price wasn’t expensive and it was delicious.

We booked for a Naha bus tour at our hotel front desk the other day. If you don’t have an international driver’s license or if you hate bus and train transfers, then I think this type of tour would be very convenient for you. I don’t think the cost is that expensive, either.

It might give off an atmosphere that it’s just for children because it’s an aquarium, but the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium can also be enjoyed by adults.

Upon entering the aquarium, the starfish section where it’s possible to touch them can be seen right away. It’s a bit difficult to describe the sensation of touching a starfish. Isn’t it extremely different from normal aquariums?

There is actually no light at all when you take pictures. In other words, you’ll have to guess how the sea creatures actually look like with light because of the dark environment when taking pictures. They're beautiful.

This is a fish, not a stone. Weird, huh!

This is probably the most famous spot in Churaumi Aquarium. When you stand here, you can see sharks so much bigger than yourself, making you feel as if you’re in the middle of the ocean!

This is the souvenir shop. They sell a lot of cute stuffed toys of the sea creatures you saw at the aquarium, but the prices are a bit high.
American Village

Because we didn’t use public transport when going here, we arrived at the American Village via the Naha bus tour we applied for. Just as its name suggests, this place is an American-style village. It has an American-style shopping district at its center where one can go shopping or eating. It’s not only the architecture which is American-style, but there are actually a lot of Americans living nearby. You can also see a lot of them when you go to the beach. The nearby beach was really beautiful.

This is one of the restaurants there. The food was, of course, American cuisine, and country music played in the background. The avocado salad was a recommendation.

The Okinawa beach is the most beautiful beach I have ever seen in my entire life. We went during early June. It was directly during the rainy season in Okinawa, but we were extremely lucky as it didn’t rain that day. We were able to see such a beautiful sight because the weather was great on the day we went to the beach! There’s a totally beautiful beach near American Village. Swimming and other water activities can be done here. Even if it wasn’t exactly a cheap trip, I still think going through all the trouble to be in Okinawa is an experience one should do.
