Fukuoka Castle was built for a period of 7 years by Kuroda Nagamasa, the feudal lord of Chikuzen (former name of Fukuoka) and son of Kuroda Kanbei who became nationally known from the NHK taiga drama "Gunshi Kanbei." Though there weren't really any castle towers to speak of at the beginning, at present the remaining towers are the front castle gate (otemon) and the Tamon Tower (Tamon Yagura). Ohori Park, considered as the people's oasis, is located nearby, as are the Kurokan (ruins of an ancient guesthouse for foreign diplomats) and other maintained historical remains. In addition, handheld tablets are also available in Fukuoka Castle, which show CG-reproduced scenes back from those days and also provides a guided walking tour within the castle grounds.
(The structure is a historic site designated as a National Cultural Property.)
