Kumamoto Castle, which is one of the three famous castles in Japan, was constructed by Kato Kiyomasa in a span of seven years. The castle is about 980,000 square meters wide and has a circumference of around 9 kilometers at the time of its construction. The magnificent stance of the castle is due to the construction of the beautifully curved stone walls, which is a peculiar structural technique that made use of the topography of the area. This structure is called “mushagaeshi” where the stone walls are curved to make it difficult for the enemy to climb up the castle walls.

There are around 800 sakura trees blooming in the castle grounds during spring, while the colors change to the yellow of Ginkgo trees in autumn. For this reason, Kumamoto Castle is also called “Ginkgo Castle.” It is also known as a place of relaxation for a lot of people in Kumamoto.

As a result of the April 2016 earthquake, Kumamoto Castle sustained heavy damages.
There are many areas of the castle that are still closed off to entry, but aspects of the castle can still be seen from around Ninomaru Square and Kato Shrine.
