The Hakata Riverain, connecting Hakata-za Canal City up to Hakata, is a shopping arcade of around 100 shops lining its estimated 400-meter length. During the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, unique Yamakasa decorations are displayed, however a corner of the shopping arcade called the "Kawabata Zenzai Plaza" displays the Yamakasa whole-year round. (The Zenzai Plaza is open on Fridays, weekends, and also on days when there are events and festivals.) From Hakata dolls to cakes, souvenir shops, and tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen, various shops and restaurants with the distinct Hakata flavor are available here. Also, because there are many shrines and temples nearby, various shops selling items for Buddhist altars and such are also featured here. One of the sights to look forward to in the arcade is the list of entertainers and artists in Hakata dialect hanging down from the ceiling.
