Bairin-ji Temple is Kyushu’s only meditation hall of the Rinzai school of Buddhism. It is also the family temple of the former reigning feudal family in Kurume, the Arima clan. The mausoleum as well as the tombs of the former feudal lord and his family and relatives can also be found here. A magnificent Zen rock garden is located in front of the main temple, emitting an orderly atmosphere together with the extensive size of the whole compound. The adjacent temple garden turns into a grove of plum trees during the approaching spring season.
